Sick but Proud Horse Mom

So I have had this nagging cough for the last week or so. And anytime I try and exercise in any way, I start to basically hack up a lung. Well this is frustratingly similar to how I felt a couple years ago with pneumonia. I went to get checked out by the doctor. Luckily no pneumonia. Unluckily, its bronchitis. So yay. The doc said I'd be fine to be out in the cold, but should probably keep the exercise to a minimum to avoid an infection. Which basically means little to no riding for at least a week or so.

Well what do you do when you can't ride?

The answer is play with your pony on the ground and buy new pretty things. Or play with the things you recently bought.

First off. Lets look at pretty, new, shiny things that my pony just NEEDED (or so I justified)

Heavy weight Freestyle Weatherbeeta blanket in navy/grey. Such a great fit. Nice snap on the front. Perfect weight for the cold front we have coming in. Love the fleece lined neck.

Bonus: Comes in our favorite colors!

And then we actually decided to do real work.

Okay that's half true. I made him do real work, because more than just walking makes me have a wild coughing fit.

When I bring him in from his pen, I always pull his blanket off, and let him have a romp around our indoor, and a good roll. And then we either tack up and ride, or goof off bareback, or sometimes play with some free lunging.

With me trying to die, we have been doing a lot of free lunging lately, and he has gotten really responsive to my cues and body language. So today, we did our normal thing, and after his little romp, I started to ask him to pay attention to me. He did very well, as always, and was being a little extra exuberant, but still respectful, so I was happy. We usually just play around with him doing some trot and canter circles both directions, and his voice cues on coming in/stopping.

Always a poser

Today, during our normal workout, he offered something that he has never once offered before.

A stretch in the canter

Charmer has always had a very loose, floaty, open trot that allows him to have beautiful self-carriage, as well as a beautiful stretch, since day one. It has made his trot one of my favorite things in the world to ride. But never before has he offered to stretch in the canter. Not when I am riding, or on the ground, or anything. I was shocked.

Horrible quality picture, fantastic quality trot

It was rough, and not polished in any way, and I still love his trot stretch. But he offers the trot stretch almost daily. Not once in nearly a year and a half of owning him, has he offered a canter stretch.

Until today

I'm sure that this seems like the most ridiculous accomplishment in the world. I mean I wasn't even riding him at the time. But for him to start to be comfortable enough in his own body, and in his own skin to actually offer a stretch in the gait that he struggles the most with, was absolutely mind blowing to me. I cannot wait to ride it under saddle soon!

Stretches
None of it is perfect, but it is a start, and this gives me something to work with, for when my lungs decide I can ride again!

Strength Training

As I mentioned at the end of my last post, the one good thing that came out of Banner's little injury and my subsequent panicking was that it finally allowed me a chance to take Charmer out to my lesson this Tuesday! I'd been trying to set up time to take him instead of Banner for a little while, but my schedule hasn't really allowed it to happen unfortunately. Photos from an unrelated jump ride at home! I've been able to keep up a reasonable amount of consistency with Charmer lately, which has been nice. And we are slowly working on improving his strength and adding in some jumps again. I have an annoying tendency to get very in my own head about riding him so I knew as we progressed, I needed to prioritize a lesson sooner rather than later so that I could get some good direction on how to improve with him. We arrived in the early afternoon Tuesday, and he was his nice calm, cool collected self on the ground. He's incredibly well mannered and handleable...

Family & Media!

This weekend, I got the pleasure of my Aunt coming into town. She was coming to see the family, but she also loves horses. Oh and she is an awesome photographer. I hope you see where this is going. I was thrilled to have her in town to begin with, but doubly thrilled when I realized she brought her fancy camera! Finally some new media! The timing was perfect, because I also got Charmer clipped this weekend and it made him look a lot nicer in the photos! Clearly we are both a little out of shape, but I loved getting some media anyways! He warmed up the best he has in a long time - soft, relaxed, pleasantly forward, and he was moving off of my right leg really well (we have been struggling with this for a while now). Knocked his laterals out of the park, and didn't go to pull on me or buck more than one time. I even got to pull out a bunch of new outfit stuff for both of us! Our OTTB Identity shirt, newest Piper breeches, new Majyk Equipe boots & new Nunn Finer fig...

Saddle Woes & Jumping Ponies

I'm definitely still in a bit of a weird headspace, and obviously still not getting back to real consistency on the blog just yet, but hey, some posts are better than none, right? I'm not exaggerating when I say this canter is an actual dream to ride. All 3 ponies got chiropractic work from my vet a week and a half ago, and she confirmed a fear for me regarding Banner - his lovely Devoucoux saddle doesn't fit. Awesome. Its hitting his scapula, and even with quite a few weeks out of the saddle recently, he still had a lot of residual soreness along his scapula. Luckily I haven't been able to ride 3 ponies lately anyways, so he was on the backburner regardless so it doesn't change much in our immediate plans, but its never fun to know you have to sell a saddle/change plans.  My CWD on V (usually using a half pad, but was testing the fit without) I've got a few different ideas on what I plan to do with selling his current saddle/what I plan to replace it with. I...
