Magical Browband

(I also considered the title "Thinking Cap")

Guess who finally rode her horse for the first time in practically a month?

You guessed it! Me!

My bronchitis problem isn't 100% gone, but it is back to a point where doing a little work won't make me die of a coughing fit, so riding can be back in the picture.

After a month of not riding, I've been itching to get back on. Plus I have a pretty new browband from BrowbandsByJayne (if you guys are interested in a browband, I highly suggest buying from her. Beaded with real swarovski crystal and sterling silver, and they are all handmade and gorgeous) and who can resist new pictures with pretty browbands.

I may or may not have had a little bit of a crazy idea - lets try a whole ride with a loose rein. Now you have to remember, this is the horse who hasn't been ridden in a month, and generally has a very loud opinion on being ridden, at any gait other than walk, without contact. Seems like a good plan, right?

To be fair, I even admitted it was a little crazy. But my horse has had this beautiful self-carriage while being free lunged for the last two weeks (there are some pictures at the end of my post here). And I have been amazed by it. And I have been ridiculously excited to try and ride him in a self-carriage in all three gaits.

Do you all see what is happening on this picture?! Me - riding one handed, and on a loose rein. Him - pleasantly going forward, without any bucking or bolting, and staying balanced without relying on hanging on my hands. My mind was blown. I didn't have to get grabby because my horse was bolting. My horse didn't have to freak out because I was out of balance or fiddling. It was just nice. We worked together and flowed nicely and it was beautiful. And I kept smiling and giggling like an idiot.

On rides like this, I just look at my horse, and I wonder what I ever did to deserve the most incredible athlete, best friend and partner in the whole entire world.

I am also really starting to see and feel the change in his body and brain as well. He is no longer the gangly racehorse with too many legs, too little steering, no concept of leg pressure, and running into contact. He is turning into a beefy sporthorse who understands how to use his legs, and has figured out leg yields like nobody's business, and has a pretty solid understanding of how to turn and when and where, and also has learned to not lean on contact, or rely solely on it.

This horse guys. He is just the absolute coolest.

All that is to say - apparently my horse approves of his new bling, and has deemed it his newest thinking cap. Hopefully magical browband continues to be magical for a long time to come, because I am in love with it (and I think my horse is too!)

Strength Training

As I mentioned at the end of my last post, the one good thing that came out of Banner's little injury and my subsequent panicking was that it finally allowed me a chance to take Charmer out to my lesson this Tuesday! I'd been trying to set up time to take him instead of Banner for a little while, but my schedule hasn't really allowed it to happen unfortunately. Photos from an unrelated jump ride at home! I've been able to keep up a reasonable amount of consistency with Charmer lately, which has been nice. And we are slowly working on improving his strength and adding in some jumps again. I have an annoying tendency to get very in my own head about riding him so I knew as we progressed, I needed to prioritize a lesson sooner rather than later so that I could get some good direction on how to improve with him. We arrived in the early afternoon Tuesday, and he was his nice calm, cool collected self on the ground. He's incredibly well mannered and handleable...

Family & Media!

This weekend, I got the pleasure of my Aunt coming into town. She was coming to see the family, but she also loves horses. Oh and she is an awesome photographer. I hope you see where this is going. I was thrilled to have her in town to begin with, but doubly thrilled when I realized she brought her fancy camera! Finally some new media! The timing was perfect, because I also got Charmer clipped this weekend and it made him look a lot nicer in the photos! Clearly we are both a little out of shape, but I loved getting some media anyways! He warmed up the best he has in a long time - soft, relaxed, pleasantly forward, and he was moving off of my right leg really well (we have been struggling with this for a while now). Knocked his laterals out of the park, and didn't go to pull on me or buck more than one time. I even got to pull out a bunch of new outfit stuff for both of us! Our OTTB Identity shirt, newest Piper breeches, new Majyk Equipe boots & new Nunn Finer fig...

Saddle Woes & Jumping Ponies

I'm definitely still in a bit of a weird headspace, and obviously still not getting back to real consistency on the blog just yet, but hey, some posts are better than none, right? I'm not exaggerating when I say this canter is an actual dream to ride. All 3 ponies got chiropractic work from my vet a week and a half ago, and she confirmed a fear for me regarding Banner - his lovely Devoucoux saddle doesn't fit. Awesome. Its hitting his scapula, and even with quite a few weeks out of the saddle recently, he still had a lot of residual soreness along his scapula. Luckily I haven't been able to ride 3 ponies lately anyways, so he was on the backburner regardless so it doesn't change much in our immediate plans, but its never fun to know you have to sell a saddle/change plans.  My CWD on V (usually using a half pad, but was testing the fit without) I've got a few different ideas on what I plan to do with selling his current saddle/what I plan to replace it with. I...
