Getting Back to the Swing

Well, basically since Thanksgiving, Charmer has had very minimal work. School, work, and life got busy, and pony got a break. There were some lazy rides, and a handful of semi-work rides, but basically I snuggled him twice a day with his grain, and maybe a blanket change, and usually a nice long grooming session once a week. That was basically all I could manage for a while.

But now, I am starting to get my schedule a little more manageable (a little), and constant. And the days are rapidly getting longer, and with the beautiful weather we are currently having, I cannot pass that up.

I squeezed in a ride on Wednesday after work, and for the fact it had been over a week since Charmer's last ride, and over 2 months since he had any real "make him work" rides, he was good. Sometimes I forget how challenging of a ride he can be. He requires a lot of precision from me, and that can be difficult, especially when we are both out of shape (okay, more me than him). And he was hot under the collar, since I made him work right at dinnertime. Horse worked his booty off though.

We both had some rusty moments, and sometimes our signals kind of crossed, but we had a really productive ride. I even spent about 3 minutes working on my sitting trot (work in progress), and it didn't feel horrible. Although my abs felt it on Thursday morning!

I know it doesn't look perfect, but I tried! I'm a little more "chair seated" than I would like, and I want to encourage more forward motion from him, but its a start! I felt like I stayed off his mouth decently, and didn't feel like I was flopping like a fish out of water while sitting!

Reach!

Last night I got another ride on Charmer and ended up working on almost the exact same things as we did on Wednesday, just with a little more canter involved.

We did a lot of lateral work on both rides as well, which he nailed - even if he was a little sassy about it. I've worn spurs the last couple rides, not to encourage any forward (don't need any help there), but it immensely fine tunes his lateral movements. I can send him out across the arena with barely a touch. He can be kind of bull headed sometimes, but he is awfully sensitive as well.

All in all, it feels like a great start to our year and hopefully we will be getting in a solid program again very soon! Hopefully going to get a lesson in the next 2 weeks, and start adding some jumps back into the equation.

    1. I'm loving our winter this year. I haven't pulled out Charmer's heavy weight once, even though he is half clipped!

Strength Training

As I mentioned at the end of my last post, the one good thing that came out of Banner's little injury and my subsequent panicking was that it finally allowed me a chance to take Charmer out to my lesson this Tuesday! I'd been trying to set up time to take him instead of Banner for a little while, but my schedule hasn't really allowed it to happen unfortunately. Photos from an unrelated jump ride at home! I've been able to keep up a reasonable amount of consistency with Charmer lately, which has been nice. And we are slowly working on improving his strength and adding in some jumps again. I have an annoying tendency to get very in my own head about riding him so I knew as we progressed, I needed to prioritize a lesson sooner rather than later so that I could get some good direction on how to improve with him. We arrived in the early afternoon Tuesday, and he was his nice calm, cool collected self on the ground. He's incredibly well mannered and handleable...

Family & Media!

This weekend, I got the pleasure of my Aunt coming into town. She was coming to see the family, but she also loves horses. Oh and she is an awesome photographer. I hope you see where this is going. I was thrilled to have her in town to begin with, but doubly thrilled when I realized she brought her fancy camera! Finally some new media! The timing was perfect, because I also got Charmer clipped this weekend and it made him look a lot nicer in the photos! Clearly we are both a little out of shape, but I loved getting some media anyways! He warmed up the best he has in a long time - soft, relaxed, pleasantly forward, and he was moving off of my right leg really well (we have been struggling with this for a while now). Knocked his laterals out of the park, and didn't go to pull on me or buck more than one time. I even got to pull out a bunch of new outfit stuff for both of us! Our OTTB Identity shirt, newest Piper breeches, new Majyk Equipe boots & new Nunn Finer fig...

Saddle Woes & Jumping Ponies

I'm definitely still in a bit of a weird headspace, and obviously still not getting back to real consistency on the blog just yet, but hey, some posts are better than none, right? I'm not exaggerating when I say this canter is an actual dream to ride. All 3 ponies got chiropractic work from my vet a week and a half ago, and she confirmed a fear for me regarding Banner - his lovely Devoucoux saddle doesn't fit. Awesome. Its hitting his scapula, and even with quite a few weeks out of the saddle recently, he still had a lot of residual soreness along his scapula. Luckily I haven't been able to ride 3 ponies lately anyways, so he was on the backburner regardless so it doesn't change much in our immediate plans, but its never fun to know you have to sell a saddle/change plans.  My CWD on V (usually using a half pad, but was testing the fit without) I've got a few different ideas on what I plan to do with selling his current saddle/what I plan to replace it with. I...
